A Novel Method for Localizing Nerve Entry Points During Spasticity Treatment International Journal of Morphology
Yang,Shengbo; Hu,Shuangjiang; Tian,Xufeng; Hu,Shuaiyu.
The nerve entry points (NEPs) cannot be accurately localized for the treatment of muscle spasticity in neurolysis. The aim of this study was to develop a new method of accurately localizing nerve entry points in relation to bony landmarks. NEPs in human cadavers were coated with barium sulfate. Method 1 consisted of horizontal and longitudinal reference lines being designated based on bony landmarks, followed by radiography and measurements using picture archiving and communication system software. Method 2 involved sewing the barium sulfate-soaked suture thread into the skin to designate the horizontal and longitudinal reference lines, followed by computed tomography (CT) scanning to determine the skin surface location and puncture depth for the NEPs....

A radiographic method to estimate lung volume and its use in small mammals Biol. Res.
CANALS,MAURICIO; OLIVARES,RICARDO; ROSENMANN,Mario.
In this paper we develop a method to estimate lung volume using chest x-rays of small mammals. We applied this method to assess the lung volume of several rodents. We showed that a good estimator of the lung volume is: V*L = 0.496 · V RX ≈ 1/2·V RX , where V RX is a measurement obtained from the x-ray that represents the volume of a rectangular box containing the lungs and mediastinum organs. The proposed formula may be interpreted as the volume of an ellipsoid formed by both lungs joined at their bases. When that relationship was used to estimate lung volume, values similar to those expected from allometric relationship were found in four rodents. In two others, M. musculus and R. norvegicus, lung volume was similar to reported data, although...

Elemental composition of individual pico- and nano-sized marine detrital particles in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Mostajir, B; Fagerbakke, Km; Heldal, M; Thingstad, Tf; Rassoulzadegan, F.
The elemental composition of individual < 10 mu m detrital particles from Mediterranean surface waters was analysed using a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-Ray microanalyser. Results show that carbon and phosphorus content per detritus volume are much higher in pico-detrital particles < 2 mu m (42 kg C m(-3) and 1 kg P m(-3)) than in 5-10 mu m detrital particles (20 kg C m-3 and 0.1 kg P m(-3)). The C:N:P atomic ratios for different sized fractions of the detrital particles were found to be 82:10:1 for < 2 mu m particles, 120:29:1 for 2-5 mu m particles and 308:37:1 for 5-10 mu m particles. The average ratio for all size classes of detrital particles (< 10 mu m) was 132:23:1. The differences in...

Radiographic analysis in castor bean seeds (Ricinus communis L.) Rev. bras. sementes
Carvalho,Maria Laene Moreira de; Alves,Renato Augusto; Oliveira,Luciana Magda De..
Castor bean cropping has great social and economic value, but its production has been affected by factors such as low quality seeds used for sowing. The quick and precise evaluation of seed quality by x-ray test is known as an effective method to evaluate seed lots, but little is known about the interpretation between of the type of radiographic image and the seed quality correlation. The potential of x-ray analysis as a marker of seed physiological quality and as an initial process for the implementation of the use of computer-assisted image analysis was investigated using castor bean seeds of the different cultivars. The seeds were classified according to internal morphology visualized in the radiography and subjected to the germination test, emergency...

Relationship between eggplant seed morphology and germination Rev. bras. sementes
Silva,Vanessa Neumann; Cicero,Silvio Moure; Bennett,Mark.
Structural differences such as abnormalities, damage and free spaces in seeds may affect germination. The aim of this study was to study the relationship between eggplant seed morphology and seed germination. Ten seed lots of the eggplant cultivar Embu were evaluated by X-ray image analysis and the germination test. Seed image analysis was performed by Image Pro Plus® software and the whole seed area and free space between the embryo and endosperm were measured. The internal seed area filled by the embryo and endosperm was calculated from the difference between the whole seed and free space areas. Based on these results and visual seed analysis, seeds were classified into three categories and information on germination was obtained for each one. X-ray...

Strain-induced crystallization in a carbon-black filled polychloroprene rubber: kinetics and mechanical cycling ArchiMer
Le Gac, Pierre Yves; Albouy, Pierre-antoine; Sotta, Paul.
It is shown in the present paper how the addition of a moderate amount of carbon black filler to a polychloroprene gum modifies the local strain state and alters the ability of the polymer to strain-crystallize. The study combines mechanical and X-ray diffraction performed during classical mechanical cycling and tensile impact tests. It highlights the fact that the strain modification induced by the filler addition is highly inhomogeneous: the crystallization behavior and the local draw ratio state are affected differently. The partial relaxation of the amorphous fraction by the strain-induced crystallization peviously evidenced in the pure gum is still present and should play a protective role. The effect of temperature on the crystallization correlates...

Strain-induced crystallization in an unfilled polychloroprene rubber: Kinetics and mechanical cycling ArchiMer
Le Gac, Pierre-yves; Albouy, Pierre-antoine; Petermann, Denis.
Polychloroprene rubber is often quoted as an example of strain-crystallizing elastomer; however, this fundamental property, known to impart good mechanical properties and fatigue resistance, has received much less attention in this class of compounds than natural rubber. The present paper relates systematic investigations combining mechanical and X-ray diffraction measurements. Crystallization kinetics are first investigated based on tensile impact tests. An approximately logarithmic time-dependence is found for the crystalline content and the time-constants are estimated at various temperatures. The impact of strain-induced crystallization on stress-strain curves under mechanical cycling conditions is further assessed. It is demonstrated that one main...

Using Tomato Analyzer software to determine embryo size in x-rayed seeds Rev. bras. sementes
Marcos Filho,Julio; Gomes Junior,Francisco Guilhien; Bennett,Mark A; Wells,Arthur A; Stieve,Susan.
A primary interest of image analysis of X-rayed seeds is to identify whether the extent of fill in the embryo cavity is associated with to seed physiological quality. The objective of this research was to verify the accuracy of the freely available Tomato Analyzer (TA) software developed at The Ohio State University to determine the ratio of embryo size over total seed area. Seeds of pumpkin, watermelon, cucumber and cotton were X-rayed and analyzed by the software which defines seed and embryo boundaries and automatically generates numerical values to quantify that ratio. Results showed that the TA has the sensitivity to evaluate the extent of embryo growth within the cucurbits and cotton seeds and is a promising alternative for this assessment in other...

Weathering deterioration in pre-harvest of soybean seeds: physiological, physical, and morpho-anatomical changes Scientia Agricola
Pinheiro,Daniel Teixeira; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Medeiros,André Dantas de; Ribeiro,João Paulo Oliveira; Silva,Felipe Lopes da; Silva,Laércio Junio da.
ABSTRACT: Successive cycles of water absorption and loss favor weathering deterioration, one of the main factors that affect the quality of soybean seeds. This study evaluated the physiological, physical, and morpho-anatomical changes in soybean seeds under weathering deterioration at the pre-harvest phase. Six soybean cultivars (BMX Apolo, DM 6563, NS 5959, NA 5909, BMX Potência, and TMG 1175) were produced in a greenhouse and underwent weathering deterioration through a rainfall simulation system, applying 0, 60, 120, and 180 mm of precipitation at pre-harvest phase. Each rainfall level was divided into two applications at an interval of 72 h: 60 mm (30 + 30), 120 mm (60 + 60), and 180 mm (90 + 90). After harvest, the seeds were evaluated for...

In turtles, conventional radiographic techniques give little information on the interna1 organs because of the density of the shell. Therefore, computed tomography (CT) was attempted in six clinically normal red-eared sliders(Trachemys scripta elegans). The CT values were measured in soft tissues such as the...
